Some Additional Wayne Gretzky Facts

Here are some additional tidbits about Wayne that we wanted to include but couldn’t find a spot for on our quiz.

Gretzky Before The NHL

Here are some tidbits about Wayne before he was a star in the NHL:

Wayne was the ‘Great One’ at an early age. At age 10, he scored an insane 378 goals in Brantford’s atom league. He also tallied 120 assists that same year.

At the age of 14, Wayne played Jr. B for the Toronto Nationals, a league that included players who were up to 20 years old. He collected 60 points in only 28 games in his first season. One year later as a 15-year-old, he scored 72 points in 32 games.

Wayne actually played in the OHL as a 15-year-old when he was called up from the Seneca Nats. Wayne played three games for the Peterborough Petes and tallied three assists.

Two teams passed on Wayne during the 1977 OHL entry draft. The Oshawa Generals selected Tom McCarthy first overall and the Niagara Falls Flyers selected Steve Peters second overall. Wayne was selected third overall by the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. The Greyhounds took a risk picking Wayne as Walter Gretzky had informed the team before the draft that his son wouldn’t play for them due to their difficult travel schedule. They ended up picking Wayne and the team convinced him to play.

As many people know, Wayne’s idol growing up was Gordie Howe and he wanted to wear #9 in honor of him when playing for the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. The #9 was unfortunately taken at the time by an older player (Brian Gualazzi), so he was given #19. A few weeks later, Gretzky ended up changing to #99 and never looked back.

Family & Personal Life

Here are some additional tidbits about Gretzky outside of hockey:

Wayne married Janet Jones on July 16th, 1988. His best man was Eddie Mio, who was a goalie who played with Wayne on the Indianapolis Racers and Edmonton Oilers. Wayne’s Groomsmen included Oilers teammates Mark Messier, Kevin Lowe, and Paul Coffey. His Groomsmen also included his brothers Glen, Brent, and Keith Gretzky.

Wayne and Janet have 5 children together: Paulina, Ty, Trevor, Tristan, and Emma.

Trevor Gretzky was drafted to the Chicago Cubs in the 7th round of the 2011 MLB draft. He spent several years in the minor leagues before transitioning into acting. Trevor has appeared in movies like Mile 22 and Lethal Weapon.

Paulina Gretzky’s partner is Dustin Johnson, who is one of the best golfers in the world. They have two children together, Tatum Gretzky Johnson and River Jones Johnson.
